1. EXPLORING A STRANGE ROOM
This is a test of energy level, confidence and friendliness.
Ensure puppy has had a chance to toilet first and has not recently eaten.
Best results if not sleepy or full.
Place puppy in the middle of an unfamiliar room with a few play objects on the floor. Shut the door.
The breeder and yourself should squat or sit a short distance apart and watch if and how the puppy explores the room during a 5 minute period with no stimulation by either of you. Does it explore or hide? Tail up or down?

A test of the puppy’s degree of confidence and social attraction to people.
Keep your hands close to your body and encourage the puppy to come to you by gently clapping your hands on the floor in front of you and calling in a friendly, playful voice “Puppy, puppy, puppy!”

3. PLAY TEST
Here’s how to use play to test a puppy’s personality using a play object e.g. a paper ball, soft toy or rag.
Wiggle the play object on the floor in front of the puppy. Stay low key so you don’t scare the puppy.
When the pup has the object in its mouth keep still and see if it will shake it.
Then while puppy has hold of the object, gently pull it away and see if the pup hangs on or lets go. -

Test of trainability and desire to cooperate with humans.Here’s how to test a puppy’s fetch instinct. Puppies that fetch naturally have a strong instinct to cooperate and are very easily trained. For a ball use a scrunched up piece of paper. Wait till the puppy is looking then gently roll the ball a few feet away.

5. FOOD TEST
Here’s how to use food to test a puppy’s personality. Place a plate of favourite food in very small pieces in front of the puppy, holding the plate by the far edge. If it starts eating, then slowly slide the plate away from pup. CAUTION! Some puppies may become aggressive! -

6. STROKE TEST (AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION)
Stand the puppy in front of you on the floor and stroke it gently 15 times from neck to tail.This is also a great opportunity to inspect its general appearance.
- Check for sores, body symmetry, and straightness of legs.
- Inspect the eyes, nose and ears and note any coughing or discharge.
- Check her bottom for soiling or worm segments.
- Lift the lip from the side of her mouth and check if the top and bottom teeth scissor neatly together (ie does puppy have a good “bite”) or not. In some breeds they will all have a bad bite.
- Roll her on her back and check the belly button (bulging means an umbilical hernia which you should have checked by a veterinarian before committing to buy).

Place puppy on its side and keep it in place with gentle restraint. No weight is placed on its body. Maintain hold for 20 seconds. -

8. NOISE SENSITIVITY
Hold a noise-making object (e.g. honking toy, coins in a tin, or 2 spoons to bang together) in front of the puppy a little higher than its head. Make the noise a few times and watch how it reacts.
